Part of what has made Cardinal's two albums, and the eighteen years in-between them, so intriguing, is the different personalities evident in the duo of Richard Davies and Eric Matthews. Now, the two have agreed that the time has come to introduce some of the songs that they have created in a live setting for the first time (excusing their earliest gig playing for a room full of friends, nearly two decades ago, and two legendary 1995 shows where Davies was backed by the Flaming Lips.) "These songs are special to a lot of people, and more importantly, they are special to me," explained Davies. "It has been a long wait to take them on the road, and while it may be a little ragged compared to the recordings, I can't wait."
In the tradition set before them by many studio greats, Matthews will not be a part of the live equation. "It's hard for me to contemplate a live version that doesn't involve eight of me running around playing multiple instruments," he admits. "Even then, playing live has never really been something that interests me in the way that it does Richard. So, while I will look forward to our intense creative partnership continuing on the recording side, I support the decision to play these songs for our fans, even if I won't be there on stage to do so."
