Review: 'BROOKES, SAM'
'This Is The Place (single)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '24th June 2014'

Our Rating:
I'm never too sure what the purpose of singles is in these days of streaming or cherry picking tracks off albums but I'm guessing the aim here is for listeners not to forget Sam Brookes' Kairos LP which W & H have already applauded for being "accomplished and evocative".

His own press release praises the UK singer-songwriter's "immaculate phrasing" and likens him to John Martyn and Tim Buckley. Personally, I wouldn't place him in such esteemed company but he's clearly a talented singer with a bright future.

This Is The Place is, to my ears, about turning over a new leaf and finding a sense of belonging; overcoming weariness and throwing off demons in the process.

Brookes couches all this in poetic and enigmatic terms as in the lines "If you're weary and find you fail to flow / let it wash over and release your toils"

His voice is so mellow and reassuring that he makes change sound possible.
