Review: 'COSINES'
'Oscillations'

-  Label: 'Fika Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '30th July 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'FIKA040'

Our Rating:
Cosines describe themselves as "a mathematical pop band from North London", a five piece built principally around the songs of Alice Hubley and the synthy arrangements of Simon Nelson.

Hubley's bland girl next door vocals are well suited to a cheesy lo-fi sound which aims for, but falls well short of, the charm of The Magnetic Fields and the slickness of Stereolab.

The ten love songs chart the oscillations of hooking up and settling down specialising in a dry, deadpan delivery.

Lyrically and musically it's hard to shake the feeling that there's something half finished about these songs. For instance, plenty of rough edges can be heard on Nothing More Than A Feeling where Hubley sings "It's fair to say I find you somewhat appealing, but we were nothing more than appealing". Surely someone could have found another word that rhymes for 'appealing'!

For the most part this is bubblegum pop with Krautrock pretensions with all the retro trappings this entails. It's mildly entertaining but largely short on substance
