Review: 'Meyer, Mikkel'
'Jolly EP'

-  Label: 'Rump Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Pop'

Our Rating:
So, ‘Jolly’ is Mikkel Meyer’s fourth release, and his first release on Rump. The press release informs me that the title refers to a Danish cola brand, which had its heydays in the late 80s, and was famous for glossy feel-good ads picturing happy & hip young people having fun at the beach. Evidently not so much in the UK. Believe me, I was obsessed with adverts around that time, and considered advertising to be more interesting than the media it appeared in or on.

It’s true that there are distinct parallels between the 80s and the 2010s (what else are we gonna call them?) in that financial crises and unemployment are dominant societal factors, but instead of focusing on these things, Meyer has chosen to escape or rather return to the happy and carefree summer nights of his innocent youth spent at illegal raves.

This EP bleeps, bloops and boings, while groovy retro disco beats bump and snap. But despite Meyer’s aim to give ‘Jolly’ a very personal, outward and nostalgic fingerprint, it simply doesn’t translate, feeling excessively stylised and sterile. It wasn’t even acceptable in the 80s.
