Review: 'Gum Takes Tooth'
'Mirrors Fold'

-  Album: 'Mirrors Fold'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '6th October 2014'

Our Rating:
From ethereal, quasi-religious choral tones to crashing drums and intense electronic laser bleeps and doodles that take retro-futurism to an entirely different level in the space of a single track, Gum Takes Tooth are masters of the warped, the crazy and the unexpected. Loping rhythms and jungle sounds, spaced-out soundscapes and strolling subterranean basslines collide with tribal chants and industrial racket, proggy noodles and whatever else you can care to imagine are all in the mix.

Weird and woozy, the unexpected is par for the course with tempo changes and stylistic switches galore, often midway through tracks. And while it may be an ‘electro’ album, many of the sounds – especially the percussion – are decidedly ‘rock’, giving ‘Mirrors Fold’ a most unique slant.

Compelling, intriguing, mesmerising, peculiar, there’s so much going on here that at times it threatens to become quite overwhelming. But Gum Takes Tooth are masters, and know just when to reign things in and bring it back down a bit,and the last track, the snake-charming drone of ‘Wych Elm’ is utterly trance-inducing. Too far out for mainstream acceptance, but an object lesson in musical exploration that deserves to see the duo receive kudos and acclaim in spadefuls.
