Our Rating:
Let’s face it, Nikki Sixx is essentially synonymous with hard-livin’ low down ‘n’ dirty rock ‘n’ roll and after almost 35 years spankin’ the plank for Mötley Crüe, he’s not about to change his ways. And so the third long player under the SIXX:AM moniker doesn’t exactly spring any surprises, and yet... the title’s actually pretty canny. What goes around comes around, and retro and vintage are where it’s at these days. And so while the kind of glammy spandex rock Sixx is legendary for may have fallen out of fashion in the 90s, it’s inching back into favour along with all things 80s and along with old-school rock. Not that fans ever abandoned Sixx and the Crüe, of course, but now it’s ‘ok’ to like rock of this vintage again, and not ironically.

So, what do the 11 tracks on the album deliver? Guitars. Chugging guitars, freewheelin’ guitar solos, and more guitars. Songs about chicks ‘n’ cars, beer and more guitars, probably,, only not so much and certainly not in yer stereotypical cock rock sense. This is actually a rather grown-up, ambitious and theatrical album. It also boasts some monster choruses.

‘Gotta Get It Right’ evokes the flamboyance of Queen, with harmonies galore, and ‘Get Ya Some’ comes on like an entire rock opera condensed into four minutes. The cover of The Cars’ classic ‘Drive’ begins sensitively enough before breaking out into something quite unexpected, sprouting a flurry of twitchy electro beats and industrial guitars. When they do really rock out, as on ‘Let’s Go’, they really go rock out and crank it all the way up to 11.

What more could you want, really?
