Our Rating:
This single is the first stuff I've heard from Dave Barbarossa since his appearance on Scant Regard's Burl Ives Ghost single about 18 months ago. This time he's backing up Lettie who although she often sounds like she is Irish is actually from Suffolk originally but living in London. This track I guess is a precursor to her 4th album or at very least a stop gap until that comes along.

Crossroads (the title track) is a nice gauzy chill out number with almost military march style rather than tribal drumming. Much of is on a snare and cymbals with strings and some electronica that make it sound a bit like a 21st century cross between Enya and the slower Cranberries songs, but it sounds miles better than that analogy suggsts. As the central character wonders if it might be time to steal away from everyone helping to set up the theme that runs through this EP.

Lake, however, is almost rapped rather than sung as we follow Lettie down to the lake where they found her, so a little scary vignette unfolds in the lyrics while it has far more tribal and cool drumming over the synths and guitars. It's a very cool tune and better than the lead track for me.

Drowning is of course what might have happened to the poor girl we found down by the lake in the last song. Thus, the EP is almost like it's part of a grander concept. This has what sounds like a harp being plucked over some skitter drums that could have been stolen from a drum and bass record.

All in a pretty cool ep and I do like the handmade sleeve with a couple of photos stuck to it although I'm sure it will mostly be downloaded from Lettie online
