Review: 'KERR, ALLY'
'Viva Merlodia'

-  Label: 'Much Obliged Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '8th September 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'MOR007'

Our Rating:
Viva Melodia is a Scottish artist who is quite literally big in Japan after his Sore Feet Song was used for the opening theme tune for the anime TV series Mushishi.

The ten short melodic tunes on his third album were composed on piano but have been lushed out with strings and hazy arrangements that emphasise their twee pop characteristics.

The LP, which was recorded in Glasgow and mixed in Florida, contains gentle tunes tinged with a glossy melancholia that is more wistful than despairing. "I know I can't go on turning sadness into song" Kerr sings on Safe From You but for the moment that is exactly what he is doing.

It's an unpretentious and occasionally diverting record yet comes laden with such a knowing sense of soft-voiced naivety that ultimately it is a little too cute for its own good.
