Review: 'Friedlander, Erik'
'Nothing on Earth'

-  Album: 'Nothing on Earth' -  Label: 'Skipstone Records'
-  Genre: 'Soundtrack' -  Catalogue No: 'SSR017'

Our Rating:
Not a soundtrack but a suite of music inspired by the film ‘Nothing on Earth’, composed by Erik Friedlander, who on this work plays cello parts, accompanied by Staoshi Takeshi’s percussion and Shoko Nagai on accordion, piano and mini-xylophone. It’s certainly an unusual ensemble, and the non-standard approach to playing these instruments (the plucked cello is magnificent but means the instrument isn’t immediately recognisable). A slow groove smoulders through the late-night ‘Aasiaat’ which combines elements of jazz and exotica amongst a swirl of atmospheric strings and mournful-sounding accordion.

The instrumentalists all contribute equally, playing intuitively and inventively to create an album that’s subtle, but not so subtle as to fall to background music or ambience. The three versions of ‘Hagen’ (solo), ‘Hagen II’ (solo) and with the trio all together, are sufficiently different from one another, and there’s plenty to hold the attention here, on what is an interesting and mood-changing set that represents a pleasing addition to Friedlander’s impressive and varied catalogue.
