Review: 'Autobodies'
'Bodywork (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave'

Our Rating:
Leeds grows bands at a rate comparable to bacteria. No real surprise in itself for a city of its size and with such an array of venues, but what is remarkable is the standard of acts the city is currently producing, and has been for the last decade now.

Enter Autobodies, purveyors of choppy poppy post-punk type stuff and who align themselves with the likes of B-52s, Gang of Four, Jelas and Cowtown. Yes, their debut EP is pretty good: an urgent bass and insistent drum drives the clanging guitars and stop/start vocals on the first track ‘Top-Off’ and there’s an edgy groove to ‘Half-mile’ that’s tetchy, edgy, jittery. Things slam into overdrive on ‘Desire Lines’, which has hints of The March Violets’ early recordings. ‘Johnny Cash in the Attic’ is quirky, shouty and energetic, and lands somewhere between ‘Entertainment!’ era Gang of Four and XTC.

Obviously, it’s impossible to say that a young band cutting their teeth in 2014 is ‘proper vintage’, but Autobodies certainly capture the vibe and have some decent tunes to boot.
