After the explosive squalling guitar extravagance of the ‘Onwards to the Wall’ EP and 2012’s ‘Worship’, the first cut from their upcoming fourth long-player reveals a more stripped-back and bass-led sound for NYC’s infamously loud A Place to Bury Strangers.
The production is straight ahead, uncluttered and direct. The guitars are pegged in the background – mostly providing blasts of unprocessed feedback – and if anything, it sounds more like early Jesus and Mary Chain than ever. Trust me, that’s not a criticism: there’s a brazen confidence that radiates from the track, which is punchy and urgent, and also rather catchy. Hopefully, it’s a fair indicator of what’s to come.
