Review: 'WILHELM'
'How High Lily?'

-  Label: 'Origami'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '23rd February 2015'

Our Rating:
Wilhelm the band and Origami Records are both from Spain and if your interests are ‘indie’ and you like to go on more than just a musical journey with your listening, as I do, then I urge you to check them out.

This is their second album and they describe it as both more ‘honest’ and ‘genuine’ and also more ‘dry’ and ‘warm’ than the first. They also describe their sound as a mixture of punk, hardcore, folk and pop and that is a fairly accurate description. The mostly female vocals tend to be in the schreechy/shouty/chanty way of things, although not always, and that reminds me of some riot grrrl bands.

They speak of being more ‘genuine’ with this album and that certainly comes through. I think it is most obvious in the music. I get a sense that they simply went with their gut feeling and if it worked they just went for it. It is difficult to back this up with hard evidence but the music is a great clash of traditional band and electronic nonsense.

Other bands they remind me of are Bis and Violent Femmes. The standout tracks for me are ‘Wings Of Hate’, ‘Erin’s Song’ and ‘Cast Away’. ‘Heila’ is pretty amazing, I can only describe it as sub-techno surf twang. ‘Cool Thing’ is another example of what is great about this album. You think to yourself, how is this all hanging together, but the overriding feeling is of being swept along by a joyous racket. ‘Jungle Army’ is seriously infectious and deserves incessant air play and closing track ‘Willhelm’s Kingdom benefits from a more mellow approach.
