Review: 'Quiet Quiet Band, The'
'Low Noon'

-  Album: 'Low Noon'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '9th March 2014'

Our Rating:
‘Low Noon’, the debut album by The Quiet Quiet Band, promises ‘an unforgettable assemblage of raucous alt-folk, poignant balladry and empathetic odes to the criminally insane’. They describe their sound as ‘country-punk’, which I’ll admit, makes me wrinkle my nose a bit, because it has heavy connotations of all of those irritating uptempo knees-up Dropkick Murphys rip-offs you get at festivals who attract all the drunken idiots. They pretend they’re Irish, working class and rebellious, but their idea of ‘political protest songs’ is a rowdy roustabout set of drinking songs with a few ‘fuck the government’ sentiments thrown in for good measure.

The Quiet Quiet Band offer something altogether more sophisticated, and while the elements one may expect (busy fiddle action, foot-stomping rhythms and furiously strummed acoustic guitars, for example), but they’re used to create something that’s musically and lyrically altogether more articulate and thoughtful – at least in the main.

Singles ‘Battery Human’ and ‘Bunks’ are clear standouts and its easy to hear why they’ve contributed to the band’s swelling fan-base. ‘Take an oath! Take a stand!’ lead vocalist Tom Purcell implores on the former.

There’s a big heart and emotional depth beneath the surging chorus of ‘Hunter’s Moon’, and if ‘Fudge (Highly) Poisoned’ is an all-too-predictable whooping punk-folk tune, the raucous ‘Lordy! Here Comes Dolly’ brings some fire, it contrasts dramatically against the 8-minute ‘Bonfire’.

In short, there’s a lot more going on here than you would be forgiven for expecting, and nearly all of it’s good.
