Review: 'Nightrage'
'The Puritan'

-  Album: 'The Puritan' -  Label: 'Despotz Records'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '24th April 2015'

Our Rating:
Nightrage, it seems, have been knocking around for some time. Long enough to write, record and release five albums prior to ‘The Puritan’. It is, they tell us, “an uncompromising eerie dramatic and melodic death metal journey.” There’s a lot to take issue with there, but I’ll start with ‘uncompromising.’ It is not. If anything, Nightrage make too many compromises.

The trouble is, you can’t please all of the people all of the time. If anything, attempts to do so result in pleasing none of the people any of the time. Now, I’m sure many will go nuts for ‘The Puritan’, but to my – not untrained – ears, it sounds like Nightrage are simply trying too hard to cover all bases.

The rhythm section is immense: the guitars are welded to bass and drums that pack a spectacular level of power. The super-dense chug is positively overloading, enough to give any speakers a battering.

The vocals are low and snarly. At least, until they break into the big, theatrical wails. And then there are the symphonic lead parts and solos. Indulgent? Well, you could say that....

Sure, they do promise ‘everything from thrash and black metal riffing, screaming vocals, big choruses and great vocal hooks, to 12 string acoustic guitar passages, twin guitar melodic lines in the style of Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden as well as emotional solos,’ and in fairness, that’s what they deliver. To improve the appearance and readability of your review, leave blank lines between blocks of text to create distinct paragraphs.
