Review: 'TG & THE SWAMPBUSTERS'
'Swamp Tooth Comb'

-  Label: 'Booze'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: 'April 2015'

Our Rating:
'Swamp Tooth Comb' is the latest CD from Ontario's Tim Gibbons, and has been described as a return to his blues rock roots. Certainly that is evident in the compositions here. If you like your music to be of the good time variety, think early 1970's Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Doors circa 'Roadhouse Blues', then there's not much you won't like on this one.

Although TG has been primarily known for his banjo playing and acoustic blues work, he appears, certainly from this set, to be well versed in electric guitar. Although, having had a history with bands such as The Shakers and The Trouble Boys, his rock 'n' roll roots are always close to the surface. The Swampbusters who accompany him feature Swampy Joe Kleinfeltr on bass, and Patch on Drums.

So, what do you get with 'Swamp Tooth Comb'? You get nine tracks of excellent blues rock, and some of the best harmonica work I've heard recently, making this a must have for those who like their blues loud and dirty.

Opening with the wonderful 'Bayou Preacher', a guitar blues with TG's laid back sleazy growl low in the mix: - “Sometimes I see you walkin' on the street, You little love thing/ I try to get my tongue talkin'....But my tongue gets tired.”

This is certainly a Bayou Preacher preaching the Gospel of love!

It's not all straight down the line blues though. Tracks like 'The Brooder' come across as 'Exile On Main Street' period Stones. This is a track that really rocks: - “Call me the brooder, I got a lot down on my mind/ Call me the brooder, I got troubles I can't leave behind”.

Tracks like 'The Bone of Contention' features some excellent harmonica work on a cracking song with which to close the proceedings: - “Wasn't looking for forgiveness or love, just a little redemption/ Make no exemption for the bone of contention”.

If there is one criticism I can level at this album, it's that there are only nine tracks on it, and I must admit, I was left wanting more. However, this is still a top blues/rock album, and well worth getting hold of from CD Baby.
