In certain parts of Scotland, mince isn’t just what you have with your totties, but a slang term which denotes something is rubbish or nonsense. Pure mince is not a good thing. But the punningly-monikered Min Diesel, who hail from Aberdeen, prove themselves to be purveyors of quality punk-influenced indie rock. Combining driving guitars and shouty vocals, there are clear elements of Fugazi, Nirvana and The Pixies, with some screaming Dinosaur Jr solos as played by Pavement thrown in for good measure.
Like fellow scots The Yawns, there’s a looseness about Min Diesel, and a similar penchant for a reverb-soaked sonic haze. They definitely favour vim and vigour over technical adroitness, and it’s the energy that shines through the blur of overdrive in a way that’s invigorating and infectious.
Mince by name, but not by nature.
