Review: 'Von Till, Steve'
'A Life Unto Itself'

-  Album: 'A Life Unto Itself' -  Label: 'Neurot Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '11th May 2015'

Our Rating:
Believe it or not, Steve Von Till has made a rustic folk album. It shouldn’t come as such a surprise: there’s always been a rich earthiness of Neurosis’ material, something loamy and ancient, and it’s a seem he’s mined in his solo work to date in his explorations of traditional folk arrangemets. The songs on ‘A Life Unto Itself’ accentuate these aspects of Von Till’s work and plough deep into the furrows already marked out.

‘In Your Wings’ is folk-infused Americana, played at a dirge pace and for its dark and haunting undertones, there’s a palpable humanity that cracks the light of optimism. The lap steel that traces the edges of the title track imbues it with a strong country aspect as Von Till paints dappled-light vignettes as he ruminates on his life in grizzled tones.

There’s a rich timbre to ‘ A Life Unto Itself’ that will appeal to a more trad-folk audience, but above all this is an album that targets the very core of the human soul.
