Review: 'Prophets of Saturn'
'Retronauts'

-  Album: 'Retronauts' -  Label: 'HeviSike Records'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '17th July 2015'

Our Rating:
‘Offering up a heady excursion into the dope-smoking amplifier-worship of Pentagram, Saint Vitus and Electric Wizard, ‘Retronauts’ is for neither the faint of heart nor mind.’ So says the press release.

And yes, it’s a guitar, old-school heavy metal riff-centric affair with a distinctly vintage vibe. As, indeed, the rather clumsy title suggests. The scorching solos are laid over thunderous chord progressions derived from the blues. Throw in a heavy dollop of dark mysticism, a dense smog of patchouli and gaze into the cover while lighting up another spliff.

I suspect these guys were spacing out and staring at Black Sabbath album covers a fair bit while working on the four monolithic slabs that comprise ‘Retronauts’. The final track, the 16-and-a-half minute ‘Damavand’ is a slow, heavy grind, and essentially encapsulates Prophets of Saturn , in that it’s a true rock behemoth.
