'Melk en Honing'

-  Album: 'Melk en Honing' -  Label: 'Housecore Records'
-  Genre: 'Industrial' -  Release Date: '29th June 2015'

Our Rating:
One-man industrial doom outfit Author & Punisher (Tristan Shone) has maintained a steady work-rate over the last decade, averaging an album every two years. This, his sixth long-player, is every bit as dark and weighty as you’d reasonably expect.

The spiritual atmosphere of ‘The Barge’ takes its time to build over eight and a half minutes, the guitars a gut-churning trudge that grinds onwards while Shone’s mangled vocals straddle the guttural growl of black metal and the soul-crushing devastation of Prurient.

‘Cauterize’ is keenly reminiscent of Godflesh or ‘Filth Pig’ era Ministry, a mechanized industrial rhythms hammering away at the fore of the bleak cavern of anger, and if ‘Shame’ introduces a more melodic element to the album’s sonic palette, it does so while cranking up the anguish and brutality.

But while it’s easy enough to draw comparisons, ‘Melk en Honing’ doesn’t sound quite like anything else, and pushed into new territories on many levels. What ultimately matters, though, is that it’s a work of crushing intensity that finds Shone on the top of his game.
