Review: 'Abbott, Fred'
'Serious Poke'

-  Album: 'Serious Poke' -  Label: 'Lojinx'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '20th July 2015'

Our Rating:
Fred Abbott may hail from London, but his solo debut – ok, it’s not so solo given than his former bandmates from Noah and the Whale helped him out considerably in the studio – is America to the core.

The title may superficially appear to refer to the performance of the white vintage Rolls-Royce Fred leans against nonchalantly on the album’s cover. However, single ‘Adrenaline Shot’ fires things off with a lively hit of American rock – a dash of Springsteen, a hint of early Bryan Adams, a pinch of Don Henley. These are the flavours that permeate the album, with its vintage guitar sound and classic harmony-led chorus hooks.

Single cut ‘Funny How Good it Feels’ is suitably radio-friendly and uptempo rock. The spirits of Journey, Foreigner, and Tom Petty – especially Tom Petty - can be heard.

There are plenty of songs that reference drinking, but instead of being gritty backstreet lowlife tales that so often characterise the London that is many contemporary artists’ muse, they’re all delivered with a typically US sheen, and of course, ultimately these are all love songs of one kind or another.

It’s got an easy-going vibe throughout, but yes, it does still deliver the poke its title suggests.
