Our Rating:
Victoria Legrand and Alex Scully from Baltimore make blissed out music and this is their fifth album. It is billed as a "return to simplicity" in the unlikely event that you were worried about the duo becoming just another stadium band.

Rest assured, despite its title there is nothing remotely depressing about this album. On the contrary, it is both majestically dreamy and star-gazingly romantic.

It opens with Levitation, six minutes of simmering grace buoyed by a kind of lingering tension; beautifully poised like floating on air: "There's a place I want to take you ........cos' you blow my mind" Legrand breathes seductively.

Space Song is most similar to the tone of their previous album (Bloom) which is no bad thing. The words and synthesized hook lend this tune a child-like simplicity; relishing the feelings of wonderment "were you ever lost, was she ever found". These are all love songs for a fragile world.

Sparks announces itself through a majestic electric guitar refrain and 10:37 is more percussion-based but the drifting, delicate atmosphere of the nine songs is consistently maintained in the way Cocteau Twins records of old were.

In many ways, the tracks merge into each other to give the effect that we are listening to single 45 minute symphony. This means that the record perhaps lacks a killer punch to make it an out and out classic but it will still justifiably make the album of the year lists of most discerning listeners.

It concludes with the information that "the universe is riding off with you" on the aptly titled Days Of Candy.

Legrand and Alex Scully say "For us, Depression Cherry is a colour, a place, a feeling, an energy… that describes the place you arrive as you move through the endlessly varied trips of existence…”,

To reach this destination, Beach House take you on a magical journey that you'll be glad you took.
