Review: 'My Life's Despair'
'Invoked with Passion and Pain'

-  Album: 'Invoked with Passion and Pain'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal'

Our Rating:
Having worked in a second-hand record shop in my formative years, where long hours were spent bickering over whether a given act should be in a given genre section, I appreciate more than many just how such categorisations are both prescriptive and questionable.

German band My Life’s Despair are pitched as Gothic Doom Metal, although this comes with the caveat that ‘The listener should really put their own label on style as the band is likely to transcend multiple genres’ Suffice it to say, elements gothic, doom and metal all equally define their sound. Guttural vocals, slow, funeral passages that erupt into bursts of pacier, thrashy metal are characteristic, and they’re laced with bombastic synths and rolling pianos and an epic, theatrical production that borders on the preposterous.

With lyrics about scars and blood and whatnot, they sound exactly how they look, which means, sadly, it’s so serious that it’s rather hard to take seriously.
