I seem to have spent the last year or so being bombarded with stoner rock albums. No major gripe, I love QUOTSA as much as the next self-respecting rock fan, and more to the point, some of the releases I’ve got my lugs round have been belters. This happens to be another one, not least of all because it’s very much on the genre’s heavier side.
‘Did you think you could ride above it all?’ they growl on ‘Bridges’ before launching into a megalithic guitar solo and seemingly answering the question in the process.
Alice in Chains meets Kyuss, with big chunky riffs and drawling vocals is probably a fair reference point, but there’s skewed country, with ‘Leadville’ slinging in some banjo on top of a strolling bassline and a driving, melody-led chorus. For all the amps-to-eleven balls-our riffing, they never forget the merits of melody, harmony or a hook.

The monster stomp of ‘Pretty Rotten brings some serious thunder while lifting elements of the melody of Roxy Music’s ‘In Every Dreamhome a Heartache’ to good effect. It’s some badass shit, with some solid grooves, a sleazy swagger and some serious balls. You want rock? Luna Sol bring it, alright.
