Review: 'Akarusa Yami'
'Heavy Climb'

-  Album: 'Heavy Climb'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '5th October 2015'

Our Rating:
It seems like after a few years of plugging away, Nottingham tech-metallers Akarusa Yami are beginning to reap rewards, with Kerrang! Radio amongst others getting behind the lead single and title track of their new album, ‘Heavy Climb’, which appears on the back of some high-profile festival dates at home and on the mainland.

Like its predecessor, 2013’s ‘Trace Element Rebirth’ EP, the sound is angular, often brutal, the hefty guitars twisted into the most unpredictable and complex song structures. But ‘Heavy Climb’ represents a significant advancement: emerging with a new lineuop, the sound is denser, more focused, the effect significantly more potent.

In many ways, the listening experience is summarised in the album’s title: you’re trying to ascend a steep, craggy outcrop and the rock-face keeps moving, while demons continually pop up from nowhere and start kicking you in the shins and stamping on your hands.

Nothing is exactly as it seems, with roiling metal riffs suddenly taking a 90-degree left into proggier terrain, or into jazz-infuzed post-rock. No one section lasts very long: this is an album built in a state of endless flux. There are moments which intimate a mellower, ponderous side, but jittery, stuttering beats keep an underlying tension, which snaps into violent blasts of nihilistic guitar rage augmented by bleeps and twiddles. The stop/start breaks and tumultuous blastbeats only add to the claustrophobic intensity of their schizophrenic wall of noise.

Akarusa Yami aren’t a band who go out of their way to make things easy for the listener. This ultimately makes the ferociously uncompromising ‘Heavy Climb’ all the more rewarding.
