Perhaps it was ever thus, but it seems that now more than ever pop music is about image and brand. So, Kevin McGuire: a former Caffe Nero UK Artist of the Month, has a super-fashionable haircut. He’s currently in talks with label chiefs in LA and Nashville over the release of his debut album, from which ‘Alright, Tonight!’ is taken.
The modern pop side of New Country is his thing, and while I’d like to believe it’s purely on the strength of his music, I suspect the fact he’s eminently marketable as the new, youthful face of contemporary country will prove to be a significant factor in his success. The trouble with fashion is that it’s short-lived, especially where style is concerned. There’s a reason no-one sports a mullet these days. ‘Alright, Tonight!’ is largely forgettable – popped up country, radio-friendly sonic chewing gum. It’s the epitome of the now. But seriously, just look at that haircut.
