Erik Friedlander stands in a very sparsely occupied field, namely that of jazz cellist. ‘Oscalypso’, subtitled ‘a tribute to Oscar Pettiford’ pays homage to one of the few musicians who can be placed in the lineage to which Friedlander stands. It’s sincere and straight-up tribute, and one where Friedlander takes few liberties with the material. It’s a reflection of the admiration Friedlander holds for Pettiford and his compositions, with their keen sense of melody and swing.
With the assistance of an impressive lineup, consisting of Michael Blake (sax), and Michael Sarin (drums) and the legendary Trevor Dunn (bass) Friedlander offers up a collection of smooth, cool jazz works which conjure the vibe of the downtown, underground jazz club, thick with smoke. Very nice indeed.
