Our Rating:
During the five years since her last album of original material, life for BettySoo has not been an easy ride. She has toured a lot, visited friends in crisis and struggled to make ends meet.

As someone who has continually battled with depression she has a particularly empathy with those who fall through the cracks in life, These songs are her safety nets.

The twelve tracks are described as "an intimate look into private spaces in life". They touch upon themes of grief, loneliness, loss but also share those all too rare moments of joy and love.

These are songs of experience but not of despair. There is no cheap sentiment or easy solutions but a sense of hope and resilience shines through.

Well observed attention to details anchor the songs in real life. A good example is The Things She Left Town With which is built around a heartbreaking list of the meagre possessions of a woman who has been left "high, low and alone".

BettySoo is savvy enough to know that Nothing Heals A Broken Heart but on Love Is Real, she sings "In a world burning down/There's still one thing that can heal/Love is real". It's this unshakable belief in the possibility of a light at the end of numerous tunnels that give these songs their strength.

There's a fresh maturity to BettySoo's songs that enable her to document broken lives without ever sounding voyeuristic.

The record was produced in Buda,Texas together with Brian Standefer who also plays cello on most tracks. Other musician friends add to the richness of the sound and help make it easily her most accomplished album to date.
