Our Rating:
Sludgecore is a thing now? It’s practically impossible to keep pace of the microgenres cropping up by the day. So this French collective, following up on their 2012 debut are prime exponents who pair sludge with metal and promise ‘slow and chuggy riffs that create an apocalyptic wall of sound only pierced by hellish shrieks’. It’s a largely instrumental offering and the vocals are so buried beneath a thunderous wall of heavy, trudging metal riffage they’re barely there. And yet the demonic howl of anguish does add to the overall impact, emphasising the crushing volume of the guitars. Those dirty, downtuned, metal-edged guitars.

It’s a pretty infernal sound; the tempo is resolutely around the 120 bpm mark and the vocal howls are purgatorial. I haven’t a clue as to the lyrical content – but again, if the cover art is a guide, it’s perhaps for the best that all I can make out are strangled screams.

As the title suggests, this is one angry album: remorselessly, relentlessly harsh, it’s ugly, dark and nasty. ‘Drone Syndrome’ may not be the most tasteful of puns, but it’s still more tasteful than the cover art (did I mention that the artwork is horrible?), and moreover, it’s something to find a band capable of wordplay in a second language. The track itself is like a Soundgarden 45 being played at 33. It’s all about the riffage. But then, so is ‘Black Mountain’, a towering riff-beast behemoth of a track which is essentially representative of the album as a whole. The final track, ‘Silent Duck’ drags lower, hits harder and slower than even the seven preceding tracks, a bowel-shaking sludge crawl so heavy it hurts.

Many bands will boast of cranking their amps up to eleven: Love Sex Machine’s probably start at twelve.
