A black dog, such as the one pictured on the album cover, often denotes depression and the mournful vocals on this Canadian's third album sound as though he is continually grieving for something lost.
"I'm not in love with the sound of my voice", Knight sings on What Light (Never Goes Dim) and you sense that he is only being half ironic in making this admission.
The title track is about becoming a dad but has none of the euphoria you'd expect this event to generate. Lyrics in other songs dwell upon darkened rooms and wilted flowers so do little to lighten the mood. Fittingly it all ends with a Black Dream.
The quiet beginnings build into more substantial band arrangements but there's something strangely joyless in these eight songs.
