Our Rating:
“My music comes to me from situations I find myself in”, Andrew 'Roo' Panes says with an unhelpful vagueness.

His grandmother was a classical pianist and his mother was once part of travelling theatre company, so you could say that art and culture are part of his DNA.

Although he now lives in London, his roots are in Wimborne, Dorset once home to Thomas Hardy, who wrote 'Two On A Tower' while living there; a novel widely considered to be his worst!

Panes says he finds solace in the peace and tranquillity of the region and this is reflected in the pastoral mood of his music.

For the follow up to his debut, ‘Little Giant’ from 2014, Paperweights presents us with ten songs that demonstrate what a sensitive soul he is.

His voice is very easy on the ear and his heartfelt declarations of devotion/lust may be conventional but are all done in the best possible taste.

Be warned, however, that his lovey-doveyness tends to be a bit other-worldly so you have to be prepared to tolerate a certain amount of kitschy imagery about bright stars, whispering rain, summer thunder and the like.

The title track is easily the best thing here, striking the right balance of yearning and aching vulnerability that builds slowly towards an orchestrated climax

A cello and a soft voice does not the new Nick Drake make, but if you're looking for some slushily romantic songs, Roo is a hunk with a heart of gold who may just be your Mr. Right.
