Our Rating:
There is no trace of Ellinor Nilsson's classical training on this rather fine debut release. She studied cello in Sweden but sings and plays guitar on an album that she recorded in just four days.

The nine songs say what they have to say eloquently and simply in a little over half an hour. The brisk, business like quality means there's something of the immediacy and intensity you find on early Cat Power albums. "I wanted to find that raw and moody vibe", she says.

The cover image of her lingering in the shadows accurately reflects its melancholy quality with themes of disorientation and disconnection of a someone who feels constantly on the outside looking in.

An unsentimental perspective on loving relationships is established in the goodbye and good riddance message of the opening track Forever ("It's not cold now that you've gone") and this line is breezily reaffirmed in the jangly pop of Let's Not Run Away Together.

Nilsson's voice has a cool Scandinavian quality but despite the ominous title of the closing track,Ode To Mental Instability, these are not all bluesy downer anthems.

October 11th is a haunting song of longing but the synth-driven melody is warm and evocative. Meanwhile, the driving beat of It's Alright I'm Probably Dreaming is positively upbeat.

The subtle variations of pace and shifts of emphasis make this a modest yet quietly rewarding album.
