Review: 'ANDERSON, MATT'
'Honest Man'

-  Label: 'True North Records'
-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '1st April 2016'-  Catalogue No: 'TND612'

Our Rating:
Matt Anderson is a big beaded Canadian who possesses the kind of rich soulful voice that clicks effortlessly into the kind of mellow groove tailor made to ease the worried minds of his listeners.

This album was recorded away from his New Brunswick home in a range of locations including New York, Nashville and Jamaica. It was produced and mixed by Commissioner Gordon who turns out not to be Batman's contact in Gotham City but a man whose past credits include Quincey Jones, Joss Stone and Santana.

Anderson comes on like a bluesy version of Barry White and like the Walrus of Love he's not backward in coming forward with his amorous inclinations. On Quiet Company he casually proposes a moonlit supper by a log fire as a prelude to intimacy.

As if to prove he has more than a one track mind, the title track has the US political system in its sights while Let's Get Back is a musical manifesto of sorts harking back to a mythical time and place when ethical standards were higher.

Efficient horn arrangements, gospel like backing vocals and quiet piano moments provide a slick veneer but the ten songs tread such familiar paths that they fail to stay long in the memory.
