Review: 'Syren City'
'Paradise in the Dirt (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '24th June 2016'

Our Rating:
Syren City are billed as a ‘highly acclaimed twisted hardcore outfit’ with influences ranging from taking back Sunday, Alter Bridge, The refused and My Chemical Romance. Which is all pretty twisted. As is the fact that this three –tracker is pitched as being a ‘concept’ EP, as part of a series of releases with a conceptual and thematic connection.

Credit where it’s due, the riffs are with and played with aggression. The vocals, too, are snarling, sneering, and ‘It’s Morphine Time’ slams in hard and whips up a guitar-driven whirlwind. ‘Danielle’ reveals a very different facet to the band’s sound, dark skewed country bursting into a huge chorus – they’d probably crucify me for citing Bon Jovi, but with a strong melody and backing vocal harmonies, it’s an immensely accessible track, however hard they holler in the verses and however hard they drive the guitars. It’s a straight-ahead hard rock sound that defines the final track, ‘10,000 Knives’.

Combining some big tunes with equally big riffs, it’s got broad appeal.
