Review: 'VELVET & STONE'
'The Storm EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '13th April 2016'

Our Rating:
This debut EP is a West Country take on gentle bluesy folk from a Devon-based trio featuring Lara Snowdon and Holly Jo Gilbert-West on lead vocals and acoustic guitars with classically trained Kathryn Tremlett on violin and piano. Crisply produced by Jack Henderson, it comprises six songs lasting a modest 21 minutes.

The opening track, Fisherman's Blues, is about growing up in a fishing town told from a female perspective and this kind of coastal setting dominates the mood of the record.

In consequence, howling winds, heavy rain and swelling tides stand as metaphors for emotional turmoil, particularly on the title track.

Despite this, the tone is more homely than tempestuous so the overall feeling is of being cosy and snug indoors while a storm rages outside.
