Our Rating:
Just when I thought I'd nailed what 'Americana' means, along comes 'Canadiana' as the next confusing genre label to get my head around.

The PR pitch for Ben Kunder's debut album is the first time I've seen this word used to describe a musician (it's more common in the world of literature).

Here's my take on the characteristics of this genre based on this record and others I have heard in a similar vein:
1. An emphasis on melody driven folk -pop.
2. Clean production values with simple, uncomplicated, mostly unplugged arrangements.
3. Songs usually about relationships and travelling with a stress on the positive aspects of each.
4. Polished musicianship by players who smile a lot and mostly wear check shirts.
5. The type of music that you could put on at a dinner party and guests might say "That's nice, who is it?" but then they would later forget the name of the artist and wouldn't ask you to remind them.

Kunder is a carpenter based in Toronto who has written nine lush and mellow tunes with a very Nashville Skyline feel and with a prominent use of pedal steel to get that lonesome groove.

It's all very easy like Sunday morning with warm shades of blue.

In other words, Classic Canadiana if you know what I mean!
