Review: 'War Waves'
'Horses'

-  Label: 'Backwater Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '18th July 2016'

Our Rating:
War Waves’ eponymous debut revealed a band who thrive on being spectacularly obtuse, a record packed with jangly indie tunes and vicious lyrics. In keeping with their perverse relishing of their outsider status, they’ve self-deprecatingly selected the review quotes ‘sub-Morrissey dirge’ and ‘the best record you’ve never heard’ for a sticker.

‘Horses’, the first new material since the album, ahead of its follow-up is a muscular slab of uptempo indie which boasts an anthemic chorus that borders on contemporary alt-rock (and renders the listing of Brand New as one of the ‘for fans of’ artists listed in the press release seem rather less ironic). ‘I was never that strong’ sings Marc Newby. But when it comes to crafted lyrics and hook-laden tunes, War Waves stronger than most.
