Review: 'Urusei Yatsura'
'You Are My Urusei Yatsura'

-  Album: 'You Are My Urusei Yatsura' -  Label: 'Rocket Girl Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2nd September 2016'

Our Rating:
For about five minutes, manga-inspired Glasgow noisenicks Urusei Yatsura were one of the hottest cult bands around. John Peel was instrumental in their explosion into the collective consciousness: on seeing them perform at the 13th Note at Glasgow Sound City, he invited the band to record a session – the first Peel Session recorded outside of the Maida Vale studios since The Buzzcocks. As the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut album ‘We Are Urusei Yatsura’ grows near, they’re finally raiding the archives and releasing said Peel session along with seven other radio session recordings.

Blasting lo-fi rushes of guitar-driven indie-pop, it’s remarkable how tracks like ‘Phasers on Stun’ sand the Pixies-meets Pavement ‘Hello Tiger’ still sound exciting now. They also remind us of the impact and enduring influence the 90s indie sound.
