Review: 'ARCHIVE'
'The False Foundation'

-  Label: 'Dangervisit / PIAS'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '7th October 2016'

Our Rating:
As they reach their landmark tenth album, there is no obvious reason why this band should continue to make significantly more waves in Europe than they do in their UK homeland.

True, they do err towards bombastic, self indulgence but that has never been a obstacle to success with other groups (no names, no pack drill!).

A clue to the lack of the kind of massive fan-base they enjoy in France perhaps lies in the banality of the lyrics where no translations or in depth analysis is called for.

Take Driving In Nails, for example. This comprises an edgy robotic Idioteque style beat but with words consisting only of the title repeated ad infinitum it doesn't really lead anywhere.

But, here again, they are not the first, nor will they be the last, band to be guilty of what Julie Burchill, writing about U2, memorably called "non specific epicness.

"Keep chasing imagination" is the rallying cry of Stay Tribal but there's plenty to indicate that they still haven't found what they are looking for.

Archive have a big, dramatic sound that, given the right light show, doubtless makes these songs work better in a stadium setting than they do on record.

Ultimately, however, the anonymity of Darius Keeler and his collective is drilled into the production of heavily synthesized, synthetic rock that promises far more than it delivers.
