This is a purely subjective position, but far bring being innocuous, a jaunty indie love song can be a pretty divisive thing, and when it’s a punk-pop indie effort that makes myriad lyrical references to sugar and sweets and other confectionary over a choppy guitar tune, it’s an instant turn-off. So Hello Bear’s irksomely-titled ‘I Don’t Know… It’s Fun Though, Isn’t It?’ EP gets off to an annoying start with ‘We Held Hands Once, But Then She Got Embarrassed’ (and small wonder, really).
And it doesn’t get any better. It’s not just the laboured attempts to amalgamate elements of Blink 182 and Weezer, but also the forced kookiness, grinner mission statement (according to their website, with this EP, they’re ‘strapping on jet packs fuelled by lucky charms ready to high five the stars’) and stylised nerdiness…

That, and the fact the band members have all adopted the surname Bear like they’re the indie Ramones, when they’re more like the indie Good Charlotte. Fun? Not really.
