Review: 'COSMIC RANGE, THE'
'New Latitudes'

-  Label: 'Idee Fixe'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '28th October 2016'

Our Rating:
The Cosmic Range are the brainchild of Matthew 'Doc' Dunn who has been releasing music for a decade or so, along with a glittering cast of players drawn from various backgrounds and bands. In total they number eight.

The idea initially was to interpret the themes of Matthew's solo work 'All Is' into a free jazz, galactic funk context and a year after getting together they spent two days recording this wonderful album.

It opens with 'Morning, Ontario' which could be hippy ambience but is perfect nevertheless. 'New Latitudes' is eight minutes of blissed out space jam with a dusting of Krautrock. You've heard it before but you'll fall for it anyway. 'Love II' brings it down into sax crooner territory and then lurches off into some shebeen for a full on get down. 'Barbara' is a noodle. 'Kowboy' revs up the congas, dusts off the organ and wonkily sets sail in a boat with a saxophone prow for an imagined archipelago.

Finally, 'Look At What Our Love Has Done' is the perfect comedown and you only wish it could last longer. The Cosmic Range fit nicely into the world of post-Kamasi 21st century jazz.
