Review: 'WALLUMRØD, CHRISTIAN, ENSEMBLE'
'Kurzsam And Fulger'

-  Label: 'Hubro'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: 'October 2016'-  Catalogue No: 'HUBROCD25'

Our Rating:
Christian Wallumrød (piano, harmonium) is a well respected Norwegian composer with a background in jazz and church music. But he is also an artist drawn to experimental works ranging from John Cage to techno.

His 2015 album, also on Hubro, was a solo work, Pianokammer, and the opening track on Kurzsam And Fulger, Haksong, gives the impression that being with a band hasn't changed too much as this tune appeared in a very similar form on that earlier release.

In the other six pieces, however, the differences soon become evident. While Pianokammer seemed more like a study in form vs formlessness, the artist now appears more concerned with structure vs silence.

This album is more tuneful, less atonal but is frequently punctuated by moments of stillness. It is as if he is deliberately using his four piece ensemble (on trumpet, sax, cello, vibraphone & drums) to create a greater sense of space rather than substance.

The PR thus refer to the stylistic leaps that jump from "giddily kinetic to the almost entirely static".

In the process listeners' expectations are constantly sabotaged and challenged as the ensemble behave like party seekers gate crashing a meditation retreat.
