Review: 'Ooberfuse'
'The Odd Ones'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '9th June 2017'

Our Rating:
I so want to like Ooberfuse. I don’t have an issue with pop music. Woolwich duo Ooberfuse, comprising Hal St John and Cherrie Anderson have been crafting considered pop albums since forever. Despite some substantial critical acclaim, they haven’t yet broken through. Album number three ‘The Odd Ones’ is one of those records which, by another artist with major-label backing would be an absolute smash.

That doesn’t mean it’s a great album. ‘The Odd Ones’ packs in some neat pop tunes: there can be no debate there. But for all the social conscience and emotional depth which inform the twelve tracks on ‘TOO’, none of it really translates into the execution of this batch of flimsy synthpop songs.

‘On the Wall’ brings some souly grunt but it all sounds a shade forced, and the 90s dance tropes of ‘Bruise’ date and undermine the album in equal measure.

Sonically, compositionally it’s all good, at least superficially. But the trouble is that Ooberfuse ultimately lack depth.
