Review: 'REYNOLDS, GRAHAM'
'A Scanner Darkly OST'

-  Label: 'Fire Soundtracks / Lakeshore Records'
-  Genre: 'Soundtrack' -  Release Date: '11th August 2017'

Our Rating:
The 23 tracks of this album make up the leftfield score to Richard Linklater's 2006 sci-fi adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel.

The drug-induced altered states of the movie are rendered musically through "surf-like instrumentals and country-tinged breathers".

Among the sound bytes, we encounter pretty piano melodies, mini orchestral scene setters, dark ambience, jazzy/psychedelic experimentation and twangy lounge numbers.

Reynolds uses an acoustic base to deliberately eschew conventional synthesized patterns. His shape-shifting moods suggest the hallucinatory condition of the film's protagonists who are hooked on Substance D. In this context the D stands for Death in a literal rendering of Timothy Leary's bleak maxim "The most important thing you do in your life is die".

From The Dark World Where I Dwell to being Escorted To The Bright Lights, think of this album as a musical head trip albeit a highly disciplined and accomplished one.
