Review: 'Fortify'
'Valhalla EP'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th October 2017'

Our Rating:
Slipping the new EP by so-called ‘easy-core’ act Fortify into the CD drive, I immediately experience a strange sense of déjà-vu – or, more accurately, déjà-écoute. Nope, this is a CD I haven’t played by a band I haven’t heard previously, but everything sounds perfectly familiar.

From the stop/start chugging riffs, needling lead guitars and melody-driven pre-digested angst that songs with titles like ‘What About Us’ (what no question mark?), ‘Survivors’ and ‘Rumours’, everything about the EP’s five tracks is so, so standard and by numbers. So standard and by numbers that I can’t be arsed to blast the ‘easy-core’ tag, with its misleading connotations of easy listening. If only it had that much bite or edge.

The Essex quintet look every inch the standard post-millennium rock band. That is to say, a ramshackle bunch of hipsters and longhairs with tattoos. The twist is the glammy turquoise-tinged peroxide blonde – and that stands both visually and sonically. Anna Louise may, for the most part, be just another female vocalist, but at least she has some dynamic and emotional range, while moving Fortify out of the domain of so much male angst and into Paramore territory. Hooray for progress!
