Our Rating:
DWJ are back with their sophomore three years after their eponymous debut and not a moment too soon.

And whilst retaining key elements from that brilliant album they have managed to fashion something different and possibly even better. Let me explain by way of contrast. Even the cover signifies a difference. Having used a black and white photo first time around "Uhrwald Orange" utilises a painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyder ("Animals of the Night") which is altogether more ancient and mystical.

This album takes the nature and organics and runs with it. If this isn't a live drummer then it sure as hell sounds like it and the synthetic elements have been bolstered by ancient choirs and African instruments. To me it seems like Ralf and Sebastian have reached further back in order to leap forward. Seb has entrenched himself further into the dark studio wood to fashion images and Ralf has enmeshed himself with the mixing desk to conjure Magick from finger tips.

The great thing about it all is the amount of hook and melody that is allowed to float freely over simple solid grooves, thereby creating something trance-like. In fact "2000 Elefanten" could be a pop hit in its own right. This is a strange world where ghostly creatures reside - bat boys, acid horses and 2000 elephants ("Flederboy", "Sauregaule", "2000 Elephanten"). The Uhrwald (Engl. "Clockwood") is a place of dreams and sounds with its own sense of time and the fact that DWJ live up to that in a world where most people fail is to their credit. Love this band.
