Review: 'Youth Man'

Our Rating:
I’m immediately reminded of Fugazi’s ‘3 Songs’ when I clock the title, and because it’s Youth Man – who caught my attention with an energetic performance at Live at Leeds a few years ago – I’m confident that it’s no accident.

‘Mainland’ kicks it off gently, near accapella, builds up nicely but subtly, before kicking in, boosters on go. Cutty, syncpated rhythms meet jarring guitars. ‘I really wanna do it / I’m thinking I can do it!’ Kaila Whyte hollers. It’s a positive message, but delivered with a snarl that says it’s as much a fuck you as anything else.

It’s only the start, and ‘Valley Girl’ really kicks up the jagged intensity, before churning bass-driven ‘Constantly’ – which clocks in at a mere minute and a half – brings a bleak, gothy tinge to its driving grunge riffery and furious vocal scream. It’s raw and visceral and takes no prisoners in its ferocity.

The melodic aspects of the closing pairing of ‘I Don’t Know’ and ‘Statuesque’ provides another surprise, and paired with a swaggering bass groove, shows they’ve got more than just raging angst to offer.
