Review: 'MARSHALL, SOPHIA'
'Song 3 EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'May 2018'

Our Rating:
Song 3 is a three-track EP of Blur songs, namely To The End, Girls And Boys and Tender.

Andy Jenkinson produced all three tracks and they are all available for free from Marshall's website.

The release follows on from two other mini-EPs covering songs by Kasabian and The Pretenders.

Thankfully, the Leicestershire-based Americana-influenced singer doesn't try to ape Damon Albarn's diamond geezer delivery. Instead, she softens the tone of each tune while still showing due respect to the source material.

Each is gently stripped back, unplugged and feminised Cat Power style; in other words they are simplified and prettified to draw out the romantic angle.

I confess that 'Girls And Boys' has always irritated me so I actually prefer Marshall's de-bounced version. The other two songs don't really improve on the originals but nevertheless invite the listener to hear them afresh and play a game of compare and contrast.
