Review: 'Dead by Monday'
'Almost Punk (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th July 2018'

Our Rating:
I’m writing this on a Sunday morning. England have just reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. It’s been scorching hot for about a month now. It’s all too surreal. It can’t go on, surely? So as I sit, considering the prospect of the world ending and everyone being dead by Monday, this seems a fitting choice of disc to lift from the endless review pile.

Their guitarist, Paddy Chapman, describes ‘Almost Punk’ as ‘a multi-faceted release, drawing inspiration from hardcore breakdowns, classic rock licks, progressive drums and the political rage of the punk bands of old’.

It’s certainly got some rage packed in there. ‘The First’ is, appropriately, the first track, and it roars in full throttle. The guitars and fizzy and the drumming strong, and Murray Taylor gives more to furious passion than melody in his vocal delivery. It’s a raw, authentic sound.

‘Dead Souls’ rocks some Zeppelinesque classic rock guitar work, but as played by Motorhead and filtered through Rage Against the Machine. Closer ‘Choke’ is very much a song of two halves, starting a bit sappy emotive, before tearing into some raging hardcore, wrapping up a punchy release that’s got guts and aggression – and some decent songs, too.
