Pitched as being for fans of The National, Arcade Fire, U2, Phoenix, The Temper Trap, Cut Copy, the ‘genre-fluid’ London-based ‘indie pop electronic hybrid artist’ Auld – a 6-piece unit founded by Thomas Pitts – preface their debut album ‘Mainstream Music’ with ‘Alilless’.
It packs a funk groove bass that twists and rolls under some plinky synths and alongside some urgent percussion. ‘Do you want a house or an avocado lunch?’ Pitts croons in close-mic position, sounding intimate but strange. I can’t tell if this is the worst hisperism or the apex o satire, which probably makes it Nathan Barley.
It’s a funny kind of sonic concoction, that sort of has mass potential but blows it with its oddity and SERIOUSLY WHAT IS GOING ON? ‘Alilless’ has all the trappings of commercial viability, but seems intent on self-sabotage.
