Review: 'RY X'
'Unfurl'

-  Label: 'Infectious Music Ltd'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '15th February 2019'

Our Rating:
This Australian-born singer may have been drawn to the surfboard and grunge world of Los Angeles but his music taps into an altogether more sensitive, spiritually driven lifestyle.

'Dawn', his debut album from 2016, was described as "a sublime study in devotional songcraft" and his follow up is in much the same vein. Fans of Bon Iver, James Blake & the solo Thom Yorke will recognize all the tricks.

Ry X's second album was mostly recorded live on analog equipment but the refined ambient rhythms are carefully crafted to evoke a gently seductive atmosphere.

With wide-brimmed hat, knee-length coats and intense gaze he is like the Clint Eastwood hero of numerous spaghetti westerns, minus the macho posturing. The X stands for enigma so the prominent key-shaped earring he wears for Foreign Tides might just be the one to unlock the soul!

The image he projects is that of an emotionally clued-in hunk, a wet dream for women yearning for a rugged man's man in touch with his feelings. "I think my mission statement is to remain vulnerable", he says; a stellar chat-up line if ever I heard one.

His music is therefore pulsatingly sensuous rather than blatantly libidinous and the gorgeous females who grace the video promos to his songs are proof that he's doing something right.
